Winemaking in Spain dates back several centuries. The most crucial time for wine production in Spain began with the expansion of the Roman Empire in 218 B.C. Since then, Spain has made its mark as a certified wine country.

Spain grabs one of the top spots as the world’s third-largest wine producer after France and Italy, respectively. Boasting nearly a million hectares scattered across almost 4,300 wineries. The next time you’re in a city in Spain, going on a wine tasting and vineyard tour is an absolute must.

Grapes on a vineyard in Spain

Your Spanish wine tasting journey typically begins with a guided walking tour of the vineyard, winery, and cellar. You’ll stroll through rows of rare grape vines, chilly underground cellars, and beautiful Spanish architecture boasting ornate stucco walls, terracotta tiled roofs, and soft arches.

Wine tasting in Spain is nothing short of a gastronomical adventure. Indulge in a multi-course meal featuring tapas and other distinctive Spanish dishes. All while tasting delightful wines brimming with intense flavors.

Most of the best wineries in Spain work hand-in-hand with local wine producers and family-owned boutique wineries. Each of these establishments grows and ferments its grapes in different styles, which means no two wines are the same.

Spain Wine Tours — Prices 2024

Spain’s booming wine tourism industry has led to a spike in the number of wine tours and tasting providers. From local budget-friendly vineyards to luxury winery tours, Spain has something for everyone.

You can book a half-day wine tour from about €65 ($68,39 USD) to €82 ($86,28 USD), while a full-day trip will cost you anything from €97 ($102,07 USD) to €170 ($178,88 USD).

Spain Wine Tours — Full-day & Half-day Travel Times

Full-day tours usually begin between 8:45 and 9 am. Half-day excursions may begin in the morning from 11 am or 6 pm in the evening.

Monday – Sunday: 8:45am – 8:00pm

Best Time to Go On A Spain Wine Tour

Spain’s Mediterranean climate is illustrated by its warm, arid summers and cool, wet winters. This means that this prominent wine country is ideal for year-round visits. You can visit in autumn when the vines are lush green and the ripened grapes are ready for harvest.

But the ideal time to go is late spring or early summer when holiday-makers typically flock to the coastlines to visit the best beaches in Spain.

Wine Tours in Spain: Package Options & Tickets

Wine barrels in an underground cellar

All Spain wine tour packages commonly share the wine tasting experience. But many others choose to stand out by offering optional additions like a tapa tasting, multi-course meal, or walking tour around a prominent Spanish neighborhood.

These packages vary in costs, from budget to luxury. But the popularity of these tours often leads to fully booked trips, so it would be wise to make a reservation ahead of time or purchase a skip-the-line ticket.

With skip-the-line tickets, you’ll have priority access to skip the long queues and waiting lists. These tickets often come with add-ons like separate entrances, air-conditioned roundtrip transportation, and visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like historic Toledo.

Catalan wines are rare and more sought-after. The wines also tend to be more pungent, higher in alcohol, and bear darker fruit flavors.

Madrid capital street landscape

Lying at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula is the capital city of Spain, Madrid. This is a city of contrasting styles, each reflecting a different period of time and development. The picturesque landscapes come with a host of museums that lend to highlighting the different periods of art.

There is a half-mile (1km) stretch in Madrid called the Paseo del Arte, which translates to ‘Art Walk’, where you will find three of the finest museums in the world. It is a city of joy with a unique aesthetic and each neighbourhood offering a different experience. A Madrid Tourist card, or Madrid City pass, will be the best way for you to get around on public transport. Don’t forget to take a break to enjoy the Madrid tapas along the way.

There is a wide variety of museums in the city of Madrid, even a few unusual ones such as the military and railways museums. The three most important are the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum. The city’s museums are rich with artistic masterpieces within, a Picasso being of particular interest.

Madrid Museum Passes | Paseo del Arte Ticket Prices 2024

The cost of the Museum pass ticket, known locally as the Paseo del Arte card, starts at around €30 ($35 USD). The pass is valid for one year and will allow you one visit to each of the three museums, Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza, to witness their permanent collections. There are, however, individual guided tours available, as well as general entry tickets.

Compare prices across the ticket providers below:

Madrid City Museum Times

The opening times of the different museums do vary depending on the day of the week. The Reina Sofia for example is only open on Monday and Wednesday during the week. You will have to check for specific times for each museum, but in general, most operate between 10 am and 8 pm with some variances.

Monday – Friday: 10am – 8pm
Saturday – Sunday: 10am – 4pm

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit the museums would be in the early hours of the opening times if you want to try and avoid the large crowds. The three most popular ones should either be first or last on your list to miss the mid-day influx of tourists. This should give you a little more breathing space and freedom to walk around with almost uninterrupted views of the artwork.

If you do happen to go in the winter months, the colder temperatures outside will deter more tourists from visiting Madrid during this time, so the museums will be less crowded overall.

Madrid Museum Tickets for Tours

There are a number of other museums in Madrid as well, some quirky, but others that pay more attention to specific niches of art. For something a little different and a good laugh with friends and family, there is an alternative with a unique experience for all that is the Museum of Illusions. The Prado is considered by some as a significantly important museum in the world for European painting. It is home to the largest collection of Spanish Art and features masterpieces from the likes of Rubens, El Greco, and Raphael.

What we liked: This is a short 2-hour tour with a knowledgeable guide to explain the masterpieces.

INCLUDES:

  • Skip the line ticket

Menorca offers pristine beaches and boutique hotels alongside whitewashed hilltop villages and rural landscapes. While this Balearic Island offers fewer boat trips, it is quieter than its neighbors. The islands of Ibiza and Mallorca both receive visitors in higher numbers.

Your jaw will drop at sunrise with landscapes on the east coast containing gullies, caves, and wetlands. You can find unspoiled beauty in the Unesco declared biosphere reserve and rural villages.

The biosphere reserve aims to protect the habitat alongside some 220 bird species and 1000 plant species. Large numbers of sea birds are known to gather in an area of the reserve called Albufera des Grau Natural Park. Another animal to note is the Balearic lizard.

Menorca is a flat island with the highest peak, Mount Toro, only 358m above sea level. The pleasant Mediterranean sub-humid climate, outdoor activities, and vibrant wildlife make this a destination worth visiting.

The boat trip by ferry from Barcelona runs from Monday to Friday and takes over 9 hours to cover the 213km distance. If you would prefer to rest during the journey, you can book a sleeper cabin.

The Gaudi House Museum is known as Casa Museu Gaudi in Catalan. It is a three-storey house with a tower roof, all painted in pink stucco.

The building was originally constructed as a model for another 60 homes to be built in the Park Güell development. Gaudi designed the garden around the house, but the building itself was constructed by his pupil Francesc Berenguer.

The project was abandoned, and the house given to Gaudi to live in. The great architect stayed in the home for 20 years, until 1925. After his death, the house was bought by the Chiappo family. They admired the architect and decided to name the building Gaudi House in his honor.

In 1963, Gaudi House was opened to the public. The Foundation that runs the museum has collected many personal documents and pieces of furniture designed by Gaudi over the years. Their goal is to showcase the personal side of the architect and raise awareness of his life and work.

Today, the Gaudi House Museum is part of the free access area of Park Güell. You can visit the park, designed by the great architect, and then also see the place where he lived.

Note that the museum requires its own admission ticket. When you buy a ticket, you will be given an admission time, as only a small group is allowed in the house.
